Before
This is my first yew. I found it at the local Walmart. I immediately saw the thick trunk and the branching low which should give good options for where to take it. I am excited to work with this material as most of my other trees in training are deciduous or tropical species. I am aiming for an informal upright about half the current height with at least one of those lower branches as jin. I have read that yews respond well to drastic pruning and typically have a nice set of feeder roots near the base that make repotting easy. I am not sure if I will be able to reduce the root ball enough to fit into a bonsai pot by next spring but if I can I plan on putting it into a brown crackled bonsai pot by Chuck Iker.
