Before
The Spanish Oak (Quercus palustris) has a wide variety of other common names including: Pin Oak, Swamp Oak, Swamp Spanish Oak, Spanish Red Oak and Water Oak. It is a deciduous tree with dense and twiggy branches. It’s dark green leaves have 5 to 7 lobes, which turn a beautiful bronze or scarlet colour in the Autumn. The Spanish Oak prefers full or partial sun and is classed as intolerant of shade. In the wild the Spanish Oak is tolerant of dormant season flooding and prefers continuously moist to wet acidic soil. It is native to North America but is also well adapted to life in Australia (as an introduced species), especially the State of New South Wales (my home state).
This tree is currently 44cm in height, and was obtained very cheaply from a large retail nursery. It was reduced from AUD$70.00 to AUD$10.00. This was one of the reasons for selecting it. Additional reasons why I selected this tree was due to its relatively nice size and the gentle sway in the trunk. The lack of branches along the trunk suggested a codominate or intermediate tree in an oak forest which is stretching its limited crown up towards the canopy. To achieve this feeling I will strive for an almost flat top design. I have never worked on this species before, so I am excited to see how it turns out!
