We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2nd ofBonsai Magazine Progressive Styling Contest sponsored by RYUGA Bonsai Tools and International Bonsai Magazine.
Please leave comments below on what you liked, didn’t like, could improve upon, etc.
The tree with the highest total score of all of the entries was declared the Grand Winner. Separating the remaining entries into the conifer and deciduous, adding the scores of our three judges together for each entry, and dividing that total by three to determine the average score per entry determined the winners. The entry with the highest total average score was declared the winner of that category.
The guest masters who judged this contest are:
- Owen Reich (USA) filling in for William Valavanis (USA)
- Bjorn Bjorholm (USA/Japan)
- Keiichi Fujikawa (Japan)
All entries have had their scores entered along with any comments from the judges.
Please take a moment today and help us thank all of the people, sponsors and entrants that made this contest a success by visiting the sponsors and judges websites (found below) and by leaving a comment on this post. And please comment on what would make this a better contest for any future one that may or may not be in the works.

Hello everyone, my name is Enrico Masini, I would like to thank all the sponsors and organizers of this wonderful event.
In particular, thank you Paul Stokes for your patience with my e-mail and my English.
It ‘was an honor for me to be judged by such distinguished judges. Thanks for your time.
Congratulations to the winners and their plants.
I hope to have the opportunity to participate in this event yet, I think one of the many strengths of the art of bonsai is to create opportunities to meet and discuss with other people and this event is the proof.
Best regards.
This was a great contest I think Ryuga and Ofbonsai are doing a great job bringin this type of contest were people really show their work over the year. Suficient time to really make some bonsai
I’d like to formally thank Paul Stokes – ofBonsai.org for organizing this year long event, gaining support from great sponsors and enlisting a panel of judges who have revered talent, knowledge and expertise in the art of bonsai.
To the contest Judges Mr. Bjorholm, Mr. Reich and Mr. Fujikawa San – I really appreciate your volunteered time and your valuable feedback. I cannot think of another way in which I’d have the opportunity to have one of my bonsai critiqued by such respected artists, and for that I feel honored.
To the ofBonsai Sponsors thank you so very much:
Ryuga – for the carving set and the cutting set and plane tix for the overall winner – an extremely generous donation for the contest.
Bonsai Today Online – for the subscription to a wealth of knowledge.
Hollow Creek Bonsai – for the generous gift certificate to a vast supply of everything related to bonsai supplies, tool and trees and more.
Stacy Allen Muse – for the e-painting of the winning tree
Bonsai Smith – for donating the great bonsai soil
Stone Lantern – for the continued great prices – I buy all my wire from them, I used a lot for this contest.
Cederbog Bonsai – for the wonderful viewing stone and handmade wooden base.
To all the entrants and all that I may have missed – Thank you, I found this to be a great format and I hope everybody enjoyed the year long event, as did I.
If given the opportunity to participate in a subsequent styling event, I’d would jump on the chance.
