Entry: Ulmus crassifolia – Cedar Elm – USA
Contest: Ryuga 2013
The newspaper is the San Antonio Express News March 15, 2013
Photo 1: Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia) a native of Texas and tough as nails. All the other species of elm
sprout out before the Cedar elm which is often the case of many Texas natives. I found this at a old
family nursery, where they just leave the less than ideal selling merchandise in the back 40. The top had
been brutally chopped off. I waited a couple of weeks to see if it would sprout in enough places to make
it a possibility for entering in the contest. It has and is vigorous. I cut away part of the nursery can so it
could be seen. It might make a nice squat tree, we will see.
Photo 2: Haven’t decided just where the front will be. The photos were taken on the 15 th and I had not
decided yet if I would enter it. It is even more vigorous so I decided to go ahead and enter.
Photo 3: Sorry about the tilted photo another possible front.
Photo 4: This certainly will not be the front, reverse taper.
Photo 5: Same view as photo one but a clearer view of the top.
