A boring pest of bonsai is briefly discussed. Is this borer the larva of a beetle or a moth? Do they occur singly or are there groups of borers in the same plant? Are the borers small or large? I ask because Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce Florida has several willow leaf ficus bonsai that have been attacked by a borer - I am attempting to determine exactly what the pest species is.

I enjoyed this article as I have been trying to get the nursery I work in to kick it up a notch. We carry pots that will crack in winter and little pre- bonsai. I just did a 2 day seminar and brought in 25 of my best trees and some not so good as yet. I wanted to let people see what they look like in winter and give a show of tropical and conifer and deciduous trees. We have a children"s play lodge next door that is huge with all kinds of children. We also have a large senior clientele.I am going to show them this article because I was so impressed about this young person. They are quite nervous about spending and bonsai is not the best selling product. I think I can improve it to a better level, so we don't look like the box store quality. This is a high end nursery and have enjoyed working in outdoor sales with conifers and maples, ect. I am looking for good whole sale prices on tools and pots and plants. If you could lead me in the direction I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks for your wonderful article.
Great article, love the trees they're great, I think we sometimes want to follow all the 'classic' rules when sometimes it is a better choice to break one of the rules to get something unique out of it.

thanks for sharing!

There are a number of shohin bonsai books, published in English, that predate Morten's book. Most of these were printed in Japan, China, and Taiwan. I've seen them dating back into the 1960s.
