I know what you’re thinking: “How could a book with 101 bonsai tips only be 72 pages?” When I was new to bonsai this never crossed my mind, but today it makes me realize that not all of the “tips” are really tips. I would have titled the book 101 Essentials, because brief explanations of each style of bonsai, and suitable species, in my opinion are not really tips. They are, however, essential information that all beginners need to know. Subjects covered are: Starting a Bonsai, Design Principles, Bonsai Styles, Year-round Color, Useful Tools, How to Create a Bonsai, Caring for your Plants, Propagating Bonsai, Some Suitable Species, Display and Arrangement.

All of the pages are printed in full color, allowing for many great pictures to illustrate almost every “tip”. This book is small in size and thickness. I think that this was done with a clear intention of making the text attractive to those of us who prefer not to wade through page after page of over explanation. A nice concise book can help the novice reader feel relaxed and comfortable with the subject of bonsai.

This is one of the first bonsai books I have ever owned, so reading it again makes me feel slightly sentimental. This book allowed me, as a bonsai beginner, to be exposed to a lot of information while keeping things simple enough that I wasn’t intimidated. This is a great book for someone who is new to bonsai or needs to be exposed to the art.

Disclosure: I agreed to write this review and received the book for a discounted price. I will always tell you the truth about anything I review, free or not.
